〔Reporter Jin-Cheng Yang/Report from Tainan〕The Department of Economic Development of Tainan City has completed the first floating solar power installation on a flood detention pond of the Yongkang Technology Industrial Park in Tainan. The facility went into operation last month and is expected to generate 120,000 kWh per year coupled with a reduction of carbon emissions by 64,000 kg.
The department states that the park service center signed a contract with Hengs Technology, a photovoltaic system provider in the park area, on May 12 to transform the Yongkang Technology Industrial Park into a green energy zone. Engineering methods of local manufacturers were employed under the premise that the functions of the flood detention pond remain unaffected.  In other words, all materials, equipment, and designs are MIT (Made in Taiwan). The installation process for the floating power facility in a Tainan industrial zone was completed on October 26. Grid connection has also been completed and the generated electricity is sold to Taipower (installed capacity of 101kW).
The department also points out that the whole technology park area employs energy-saving LED lighting and solar panels have been installed on surfaces and rooftops of 8 parking lots, the service center, the sewage treatment plant, and the elevated water tanks of the park area. The installed capacity amounts to 380kW and 416,000 kWh of generated electricity are sold annually, generating NT$ 2.1 million of additional revenue for the city government annually. In addition, businesses in the whole park area have completed a total of 60 applications for a total installed capacity of 8901.135KW.
The city government also utilized the flood detention pond for the installation of a green power generation facility. A pilot floating solar power facility which is the first of its kind in Tainan has been completed in the Yongkang Technology Industrial Park. The estimated annual power generation of this facility is 120,000 kWh. In addition, similar floating solar power systems will be installed in the flood detention ponds of Tree Valley Park and Liou-Ying Technology and Environment Industrial Park in February and April of next year. The combined installed capacity of these three installations will reach around 9.2MW.
Tendering and contracting procedures will be completed successively for other areas including Anding public detention basin 1 and 2 and reservoir and pond areas (by the Chia-Nan Irrigation Association). The total installed capacity of these floating solar power installations is expected to reach around 33.8MW.
