2016/11/05
On the 5th of this month, President Tsai Ing-Wen was accompanied by Tainan City Mayor Lai Ching-Te and Legislator Huang Wei-Che to visit at Ta Ya Electric Wire and Cable in Tainan. The group of visitors was hosted personally by Ta Ya Chairman Shen Shang-Hung. Tsai Ing-Wen said in her speech that the visit had shown her the potential of green energy here in Tainan and how the local government is committed to promoting local industries. She hoped to see central and local governments working closer together to transform Taiwan's industries, and thanked local businesses for investing into the government's initiatives.

Ta Ya Electric Wire and Cable is a 61-year old business run by Chairman Shen Shang-Hung. Its main business activities are the manufacturing of machinery, cables, and electronic components for power generation/transmission/distribution. The company first set foot on solar power generation in 2015, and later activated its first solar power plant in 2016 under the name "Taya-Hengs Power." Electricity generated from the solar power system was sold to Taiwan Power Company, which amounted to more than NT$10 million in revenues so far.

Shen Shang-Hung said that Ta Ya's expansion into China in 1993 was made for the purpose of serving its customers. The company has kept its Taiwanese factories running all this time simply because he saw the potential of expanding to the rest of the world through Taiwan. Mr. Shen had supported the government's first southbound expansion policy back in 1995 when he established a Vietnamese subsidiary that later became the first foreign company to be listed for trading in Vietnam. He remains supportive of the government's new southbound expansion initiative, and plans to use the Vietnamese subsidiary as a gateway into the ASEAN market.

Tsai Ing-Wen said in her speech that Ta Ya Electric Wire and Cable is a very important player in Taiwan's cable industry. Not only does the company possess the technology to produce extra high voltage power cables, telecommunication cables and magnet wires, its products have been certified by many sources worldwide. Apart from its success in the cable business, Ta Ya has also been active in exploring opportunities for business diversification and transformation. President Tsai acknowledged Ta Ya's efforts and considered the company a good example to many high-tech manufacturers in Taiwan.

She then pointed out that Taiwan's first "zero-carbon architecture" - the "Magic School of Green Technologies" located within National Cheng Kung University" - was constructed using Ta Ya's environmental-friendly cables. This appealing, energy-saving green architecture offers several environmental-friendly features including absence of lead, and signifies the company's successful attempt at green energy. Today, Ta Ya has demonstrated how photovoltaic can be utilized to achieve green production. Starting from its own rooftop, the company is building up competitiveness through stable and safe green energy.

After learning Ta Ya's extensive efforts in the green energy business, Tsai Ing-Wen came to appreciate the ambition that local businesses have shown and the level of commitment the local government had made to support the industry. To ensure successful transformation of Taiwan's industries, the central government will be making more careful plan in its future policies and engage local government and businesses in its decision-making process to a greater extent.
