Front-of-the-Meter Energy Storage System (FTM)

Front-of-the-Meter (FTM) energy storage systems are directly connected to the power transmission and distribution grid. These systems are developed and managed by energy storage operators and are installed upstream of the electricity meter, which is why they are referred to as “front-of-meter” storage systems.
The primary function of FTM energy storage is to maintain grid stability by providing ancillary services such as frequency regulation. These systems support peak shaving and valley filling, load shifting, and voltage stabilization. Such installations must undergo review and testing by Taiwan Power Company to ensure compliance with grid interconnection technical requirements and may participate in the ancillary service market to enhance economic efficiency.

Key Functions and Advantages

  • Grid Stability Support With rapid response capability, the system provides frequency regulation services to help the grid respond to supply-demand fluctuations and ensure stable power system operation.
  • Participation in Ancillary Service Markets The system can act as a service provider in the electricity market by supplying services such as automatic frequency control (AFC).
  • Renewable Energy Integration For example, in solar power applications, the system stores energy when solar generation is at its peak and discharges during high-demand periods to help mitigate the intermittency of renewable energy sources.
  • Enhanced Grid Reliability The system provides necessary voltage and frequency support during grid disturbances, improving overall power system stability and reliability.
