President Tsai Ing-Wen said during her visit to Ta Ya Electric Wire and Cable today (the 5th) that the local government and businesses play a very important role in the central government's green energy policy, and that successful transformation of Taiwan's industries will require contribution from all parties involved.
During her visit, President Tsai acknowledged the significance of Ta Ya Electric Wire and Cable in Taiwan's cable industry. Not only does the company possess strong technological capacity to produce extra high voltage cables, telecommunication cables, and magnet wires, it received many environmental and green certifications as well. Apart from its success in the cable business, Ta Ya has also been active in exploring opportunities for business diversification and transformation. President Tsai acknowledged Ta Ya's efforts and considered the company a good example to many high-tech manufacturers in Taiwan.
President Tsai was especially impressed knowing that Ta Ya not only introduced green products to its portfolio, but also recently ventured into green energy, built its own solar power plant and attempted to incorporate sustainable energy source as part of its competitive advantage.
Ta Ya Group Chairman Shen Shang-Hung said that the group is dedicated to becoming the leader in energy connection and environmental protection. This purpose has motivated the company to making extra efforts toward green products. Ta Ya is the first lead-free cable manufacturer in Taiwan. The environmental friendliness of its products had won the company the 1st "Green Classics Award" from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the 2014 EPIF Green Mark Award. Ta Ya has also invested extensively in recent years into renewable energy (solar power). It has so far constructed 8MW of power capacity, and plans to expand by 10MW per year, 50MW over 5 years to help realize the government's vision of a nuclear-free homeland by 2025.
During the visit, Director General Fang Jin-Cheng of Tainan City Government Bureau of Economic Development gave President Tsai a briefing on "Current State and Future of Tainan as a Photovoltaic City." Fang Jin-Cheng said that, ever since Mayor Lai introduced his goal of building Tainan as a low-carbon, sustainable, and high-tech city in 2011, the city has so far approved 3,387 solar power installations with a total capacity exceeding 210MW, which is equivalent to 95% of Tsenwen Power Station's annual capacity and places Tainan ahead of other counties and cities. Meanwhile, the city government is implementing a 2-year expansion plan that expects to install another 220MW of solar power capacity, or another Tsenwen Power Station-equivalent, by the end of 2018.
Mayor Lai Ching-Te said that Tainan City is privileged to take lead in the development of green energy, which is part of President Tsai's new industrial policy. In the future, the city government will be working closely with district representatives, the city council and industry participants to fully support the President's policies.
