Behind-the-Meter Energy Storage System (BTM)

Behind-the-Meter (BTM) energy storage systems are installed on the user side of the electricity meter. The primary function is to provide power support for end users by storing electricity during off-peak periods and discharging during peak periods to reduce electricity costs (peak shaving and valley filling), or to serve as an emergency backup power source.
Unlike front-of-meter (grid-side) energy storage systems, BTM systems are closer to end users and are designed to optimize individual energy consumption efficiency and cost management while indirectly supporting grid stability.

Operating Principles

  • Low-Cost Energy Storage:During off-peak hours with lower electricity prices or when renewable energy generation is in surplus, electricity is stored in the battery system.
  • Peak-Time Discharge:During peak demand periods or when electricity prices are higher, stored energy is released to reduce electricity expenses. Under certain conditions, excess electricity can also be fed back to the grid for bill credits while helping balance grid demand.
  • Smart Energy Management:Typically integrated with an Energy Management System (EMS), enabling intelligent control of charging and discharging operations while recording energy consumption data, functioning similarly to an energy “water tower” that regulates power usage.
