Fires caused by burning electrical appliances and wires are a common phenomenon in Taiwan. In 2016, 608 such incidents occurred in Taiwan, resulting in 49 fatalities. Taya Pristine Homeland Foundation and Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association R.O.C. have jointly organized an Electrical Wiring Safety Check Program for Old Buildings effective immediately. Professional electrical engineers conduct safety checks of electrical equipment in people’s homes. Residents of the greater Taipei area are welcome to submit online applications.

By tapping the company’s expertise in the electric wire and cable industry, Taya Pristine Homeland Foundation formed an electrical wiring safety volunteer team in 2013. This team frequently visits neighboring communities of Taya HQ in Tainan to raise electrical wiring safety awareness. Starting this month, the foundation goes a step further by organizing a one-year “Electrical Wiring Safety Check Program for Old Buildings” in cooperation with the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association. The first stop of this program was Xindian, New Taipei City.
Mr. Jian-Xing Wu and Jian-Zhi Zheng, two engineers of the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association, proceeded to the home of Mr. Ruan accompanied by Taya colleagues.[MH1]  The two engineers started with a brief explanation of inspection items to the owner. They then went on to inspect all electrical wiring and respective voltages starting from the switchboard and diagnosed electricity leakage of large-scale electrical devices. They also searched for hot spots with an infrared thermal imaging device. During the outdoor inspections it was detected that the insulation of the electric wiring for the boiler was damaged. The owner was not aware of this danger.
The second stop was Ms. Lin’s home in Luzhou, New Taipei City. All inspections were carried out by Mr. Jian-Xing Wu and Yu-Fan Lin. The engineers pointed out that the inappropriate use of extension cords poses a significant danger requiring immediate attention. Taya points out that the engineers always provide an initial explanation of results and recommendations right after completion of each inspection. This is followed by an official inspection report issued by the foundation. Owners of buildings 20 years or older in the greater Taipei area are welcome to apply for safety checks online.
