New Deployment to Embrace Green Energy Trends, Major Motorcycle Exhaust Pipe Maker Broad Bright Industrial Sees Future in Solar Energy

2022/06/29

While Broad Bright Industrial may not be a household name, and Taiwanese people may not know what products they make, but they probably use Broad Bright’s products every day; 80% of the exhaust pipes and silencers used by Taiwan’s top three motor scooter and motorcycle manufacturers come from Broad Bright. When it comes to EVs, Broad Bright is also a major supplier of chassis and support parts to Gogoro. The main reason why this heavyweight supplier of key components for fuel motorcycles is moving into EV components is because it sees carbon reduction as an inevitability, and that EVs will one day supplant traditional fuel-powered vehicles.

In an era of increasing attention on carbon reduction, component manufacturers and energy suppliers have changed from irrelevant to highly relevant

“EVs will become the norm in the near future, and the source of electric energy will be the key to winning or losing in the market playing field.” The observations from Chiu-Ming Wang, President of Broad Bright Industrial, reveal that the company not only intends to extend its manufacturing advantages to EVs, but is also very optimistic about the development of green energy. At the same time, it is evident from him that the second generation of entrepreneurs have transformed their roles from “transitioning from industry compliance to innovation and transformation”, and that they have elevated their goals from “focusing on their own business to pursuing balanced development of ESG, i.e. environment, social and governance” for Taiwanese companies.

Broad Bright Industrial’s optimism on green energy actually goes way back. Since the early days of the company, which was founded nearly 50 years ago, when it was required to meet standards in OEM orders and export components to Europe with non-toxic raw materials, it understood that industry development would move from efficient production to environmentally sustainable, low-pollution and low-carbon production. Therefore, six years ago, when it saw that its friend and next-door neighbor, Ta Ya Electric Wire & Cable, had actively transformed into an “energy connection” company that deals with all aspects of energy generation, transmission, conversion, storage, and management, the company was profoundly inspired to emulate Ta Ya’s example. Since more than four years ago, Broad Bright Industrial has leased more than 11,570 sqm of its factory roof to Ta Ya to build solar energy installations and energy storage facilities (including 330sqm on flat ground), making it the second largest solar energy installation site among all the rooftop solar installations by Ta Ya.

President Wang pointed to the roof, “We have always been conservative in traditional industries, but considering Ta Ya’s achievements in solar power generation over the past few years has given me more confidence in the future of solar power in Taiwan. The solar roof is the first step for Broad Bright to enter the green energy industry, and we will readily explore more collaboration opportunities with Ta Ya in the future.”

What Does a Company Pass On? A Win-win Situation and a Beautiful Environment For All

In the past, wires and cables were mostly buried underground and well-hidden from public view, and so were the key components of motorcycles and scooters. Today, Ta Ya and Broad Bright, the two hidden champions in their respective industries, are bound by their commitment to solar energy. For Taipower, Ta Ya is actively building photovoltaic power generation facilities and selling power generated to Taipower, reducing the demand for thermal power generation and mitigating air pollution, while also deploying energy storage equipment to help cut off the worries of continuous power outages and stabilizing Taipower’s power grid. For Broad Bright, which provides the site, installing solar energy devices on the roof can extend the useful lifespan of the roof, insulate the factory and prevent water leakage, and contribute to environmental protection while collecting rent, thus fulfilling its corporate social responsibility. From Broad Bright’s perspective, on the one hand, it is a friendly gesture and obligation to its old friend and green energy, and on the other hand, it is also a positive response by Tainan manufacturers to fostering Tainan “as the top among six special municipalities of Taiwan by operating 20% of the nation’s solar energy installation capacity.” Together, Ta Ya and Broad Bright will create an all-win situation for the public, Taipower, the city government, Ta Ya, and Broad Bright.

As the first-generation founder of Broad Bright, Mr. Yueh-Shan Wang, is an avid collector of antique cars and artworks, with the motivation of preserving the beautiful values of hard work and practicality through objects. His son, Hong Wang (Chairman of Broad Bright Industrial), and President Chiu-Ming Wang jointly inherited their father’s family precepts of “passing on good things and sound values” to expand the family enterprise and wealth into a competitive advantage for the next generation and to pass on a good environment and sustainable energy to Taiwan.
