Attention to old homes more than 30 years old! Is your home’s electrical use and distribution safe? Green Inside of Ta Ya Cable joined with the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association to co-host the “Electrical Safety Inspection for Old Homes” event. They have serviced over 60 households as now today. Homeowners who participated shared that they were quite surprised that the inspection service is completely free. On top of the inspections by professional electrical engineers, professional devices were used to inspect parts that cannot be seen. The procedure was not sloppy at all. The most memorable part was learning the correct electrical safety knowledge, very beneficial indeed.
Green Inside of Ta Ya Cables pointed out that there are frequent news of fires caused by appliances and electrical devices in Taiwan. There were a total of 608 accidents and 49 deaths in 2016. Being cable professionals, the foundation established the electric wire safety volunteer team in 2013. They ventured to neighborhoods by the Tainan Headquarters to promote electrical safety knowledge. In the 4th quarter of 2017, they cooperated with the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association to allow professional electrical engineers to safeguard the electrical safety of the people.
The foundation pointed out that this event is prioritized for applicants with homes over 30 years old. A volunteer of the foundation and a professional engineer of the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association will visit the home of the applicant. First, the inspection procedure will be explained to the homeowner in order to understand the home and electrical conditions. Then, the engineer will use professional devices to test the condition of every electrical equipment in the home, the electric wire voltages, as well as electricity leaks on large appliances.

Engineer Huang, Yi-Jun of the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association expressed that many people have incorrect electrical knowledge. The most common mistakes are 1) to change or extend wires by themselves; 2) to incorrectly store or extend wires; 3) to bind wires for convenience or cosmetics; 4) the prolonged use of lamp wires in the worship hall can have potential dangers; 5) the transformers of gaming consoles or 3C products may be short circuited from fall damage; 6) the inversion of the power plug of electric pots may also lead to power leakage.
In addition, the engineer will request that all electrical equipment are turned on to understand the maximum load of the overall electrical use, observe the condition of the switchboard, carefully inspect and measure the temperature of circuit during electrical use, and use professional devices to test the casting leak of electrical equipment and the insulation of the electric wires. The complete inspection takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the condition and size of the house.
Huang, Yi-Jun pointed out that the engineer will summarize and photograph the inspection, and provide preliminary electrical safety suggestions to the homeowner. However, he believes that the teaching of correct electrical safety knowledge is more important, so during the inspection process, more than 30% of the time will be used to promote knowledge and emphasize the importance of prevention. Finally, every inspected household will receive an electrical safety inspection report within two weeks.

After receiving the electrical safety inspection report, how can homeowners seek help? Huang, Yi-Jun suggested that they can ask accredited electrical system businesses to improve the electrical distribution of their homes. Licensed professionals can plan and repair the electrical distribution according the the overall electricity use of the home, and provide better assurance than individual electrical contractors. In the event of a dispute, homeowners can always turn to the accredited electrical system business.
Mr. Wang who participated in the inspection for old homes shared that he was quite surprised that the inspection service is completely free. Professional electrical engineers usually do not inspect ordinary homes and small individual cases. The foundation and the Taiwan Professional Electrical Engineers Association promoted this event to fulfill corporate social responsibilities, not sloppy at all. From inspecting the appearance of the electricity use and distribution to using professional devices to inspect parts that cannot be seen, nothing was left out.
The most memorable part was that during the inspection, the engineer kept on telling him where to pay attention to and the correct electrical safety knowledge. The engineer used easy-to-understand metaphors to allow everyone in the family to understand. One inspection to learn so much correct electrical safety knowledge, very beneficial indeed. He hopes that more people can know about this event. It is a meaningful event for the majority of Taiwanese population living in dense residential areas. He hopes everyone can participate.
